Good To Know: April 2022 🧑💻
A monthly round-up of things happening in hiring, D&I, and humanity.
Hey Everyone,
Welcome to Good to Know! If you are new here, I publish Good to Know on the last Tuesday of every month.
Unlike most posts, Good to Know is a round-up of things going on in hiring, D&I, and humanity with some of my comments. Its purpose is to showcase some of the great work that others are doing and learn from them.

✍️What I wrote this month✍️
This month was all about Job Descriptions. Like many of you, I’ve spent a good amount of time lately writing them so I looked into some best practices.
How to Thrive in a Remote World - A conversation about thriving in a remote world with Laïla von Alvensleben of MURAL.
Determining Traits 🧑🌾👩🏽💻👨🏼🏫👩✈️🧑🏾⚖️ - Evaluating talent based on traits, not guesses.
The Importance of Curiosity🧐 - Curiosity is my favorite trait for salespeople - why and how I evaluate it.
Standardized testing is BACK at MIT
MIT Admissions did away with its standardized testing admissions requirement during the pandemic. But doing so didn’t further their mission “to recruit, select, and enroll a diverse and talented group of students who are a good match for MIT’s unique education and culture” so now it’s back. Here’s what they had to say about it.
Our research shows standardized tests help us better assess the academic preparedness of all applicants, and also help us identify socioeconomically disadvantaged students who lack access to advanced coursework or other enrichment opportunities that would otherwise demonstrate their readiness for MIT. We believe a requirement is more equitable and transparent than a test-optional policy.
Kudos to MIT for using data, not emotion, to guide their decision-making. As someone who was all for doing away with the standardized testing requirement, I’m now rethinking my stance in light of their findings.
Raising money for a great cause
On Saturday, April 30th I’m riding a bike from Nashville to Sewanee, TN - a distance of about 115 miles. Why? To raise money for the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis.
If you’d like to learn more you can do so here. Any donation you make is much appreciated.

Employers and well-being
During the pandemic, employees had a high perception of their employer’s care for their well-being. Now? Well, we’re close to a 10-year low.
Maybe it’s time to ask your coworkers how they’re doing?
