Good To Know: June 2022 🧑💻
A monthly round-up of things happening in hiring, D&I, and humanity.
Hey Everyone,
Welcome to Good to Know! If you are new here, I publish Good to Know on the last Tuesday of every month.
Unlike most posts, Good to Know is a round-up of things going on in hiring, D&I, and humanity with some of my comments. Its purpose is to showcase some of the great work that others are doing and learn from them.
Hot, dry, and by the time this goes out, on a big extended family vacation (🤞),
Ben

✍️What I wrote this month✍️
June was all about learning and remote work. More to come from both themes in July.
🧑🏫 Learning From Bad 🧑🏫 - Takeaways from the contemporary job search.
Lessons From One Year In 🎂 - I’ve been writing Lying to Ourselves for a year, what I’ve learned in the process.
Remote Work, Cognitive Dissonance, and Market Size 🥧 - Total addressable market is a thing, so why doesn’t apply to talent?

The loyalty tax💸
I love the idea of retention bonuses. Smart companies are already giving retention bonuses to loyal employees, and dumb organizations are complaining about The Great Resignation.
📉A weird recession📉
We’re probably in a recession (or very close to one) but I don’t see unemployment getting above 5.5%.
I’m a big fan of The Compound and it’s nice to see that fintwit legend Josh Brown agrees with me.
Bias in feedback🙅
Textio is a company that analyzes text for bias, so it has a direct business interest in promoting the idea that feedback can be a bit biased. Even so, the results from their study of performance reviews is pretty enlightening.
Side note: I made a TikTok about this research and many, man people in my comments, especially those of Hispanic descent, HATED the use of “latinx” - if the group your referring to hates the name you have for them it’s probably time to stop using it.
🐤Solid Tweets🐤
The big SHRM conference this year did not go well.
Quick hits💥
The two best pieces I’ve read concerning the Roe v Wade decision are A Politically Incorrect Blogpost and Navigating Loss of Abortion Services — A Large Academic Medical Center Prepares for the Overturn of Roe v. Wade. Both are worth your time regardless of your political affiliation.
And Finally📈…
Would you mind sharing Lying to Ourselves with a friend or colleague if you find the posts valuable?
That’s it for me. We’ll be back next week. Thanks again for reading!
