In the midst of hiring my first direct report I discovered that everyone on the hiring committee, including me, was using their gut to evaluate the candidates. The more I thought about it, the more absurd the process seemed. The decision of who we work with is the most important professional decision we make - why are we so cavalier about it?

So I decided to learn as much as I could about the hiring process, where it’s good, where it’s bad, and how we can improve it. Over the past decade I’ve hired hundreds of people at high-growth start-ups where I had the opportunity to test tons of theories to find what works best in the real world. Maybe it’s just me, but I have found that process to be surprisingly fun and rewarding.

My goal with this newsletter is to share what I’ve learned so we can increase our teams’ performance, increase the diversity of our organizations, develop our ability to find undervalued talent, and create opportunities for the people we’ll need if we are going to solve hard problems.
